Simple Hair Care Regimen When Wearing Sew-In Weaves

Spray light oil sheen on your curly sew-in when the curls begin to get dull

Weaves are great for switching up hairstyles without having to do anything drastic with your own hair. You  could have waist-length wavy hair this month and a short blonde bob the next. But remember! your hair is still under all that lovely extension goodness and needs to be taken care of too.

Here are a few simple tips on caring for your hair and weave:

Top up on Protein –

  • Protein is a big deal in hair care because your hair is actually made up of the stuff. Some of this protein is lost during general hair care practices like relaxers, colouring, combing and even from being in the sun for too long. Protein must be replenished to your strands on a regular basis to strengthen them and reduce the chances breakage.
Where's all that protein that's supposed to be in my hair? Have a look and see.

  • A protein treatment should be done every 2 weeks even when while your weave is in. You can do a treatment before you wash your hair or during the process. A good protein treatment to use is Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor. By all means try other protein treatments. Do not skip this step!

The next thing you should always do is Moisturize! –

  • After the stylist braids you hair, look in the mirror to see the pattern.  Once the hair is sewn in, you will not be able to see your scalp that well.  If you know the pattern that your hair was braided in, this will help you with moisturizing and/or oiling your scalp directly. As you will not be able to use a creamy moisturizer, you are best off going with either a moisturizing braid spray or a spray leave in conditioner. Again, just lift your extensions and spray the braids underneath lightly. You can also massage your braids a bit to ensure that every section is moisturized.

Deep Condition time! –

  • Yes, you must deep condition even when you are wearing a sew in! Apply normal conditioner to your extensions and apply watered down conditioner to your own braids using a bottle with a pointed tip. You can get these bottles form your local beauty supply store. You can wrap your hair with cling film or cover with a plastic shower cap. The cling film traps the moisture even more.

Dry Thoroughly! –

  • Blow drying your extensions is not enough! You have to sit under a dryer as well to allow your cornrows underneath the weave to dry completely. We don’t want to get a fungal infection on our scalps now. NB: This does not apply to your own hair because your scalp is exposed to the open air.

With these tips, you should be on your way to healthy hair and a beautiful weave.
