Although natural hair is becoming more and more common, there are still misconceptions about it. Before relaxers were easily accessible, black people used a variety of ways to straighten  their hair, most of which were very harsh and damaging. Although the majority of black women’s still prefer to wear their hair straight, there has been a steady increase of women wearing their natural hair. Women wear their hair straight because they believe the myths about natural hair. What are the real truths? What do you believe?

  1. Natural Hair isn’t Versatile

If you think your natural hair can only be worn in an Afro, you’ve been missing out on a ton of beautiful hairstyles That are healthy for your hair and scalp. Here are a few:

2. Natural Hair is Strong

Natural hair looks strong but, the structure of natural hair actually makes it more susceptible to breakage. It needs to be treated with the greatest of care in order to flourish. Wide toothed combs, natural ingredients and your own fingers are the best products for your hair.

3.Black Hair doesn’t Grow.

Hair grows an average 1/2 inch per month. Black hair can sometimes grow a bit slower than this but not by much. Black hair has a tendency to shrink up preventing you from seeing It’s real length causing you to think its it growing.  The use of relaxers and other products can cause breakage. If breakage=to growth,it will seems as if hair is not growing at all.

4.  Natural Hair is hard to manage

True, it can be difficult to manage if you do not have the proper knowledge. If you attempt to treat it like straight hair, use the same tools and expect the same results as straightened hair, you are bound to be disappointed. However, if you treat natural hair in a way that doesn’t try to change it or alter it, it can be as manageable as any other hair type.

5. Greasing Your Scalp is Good for Moisture

If you have noticed that your hair is dry even though you have been using a variety of moisture products, the reason is that oils, grease and other mineral products that contain petroleum, lanolin and mineral oil do not moisturizer your hair effectively. All they do is clog your scalp and attract dirt.

Try using natural oils such as coconut oil, paying special attention to your ends, which tend to be dry. You do not have to ‘grease’ your scalp for it to be healthy.
